Nova Scotia’s provincial parks and special places are offering a variety of informative and entertaining programs and events this summer.

For example, this Friday, July 30th the Fundy Geological Museum is sponsoring a Walking Tour of the beach section of Spicer’s Cove at Cape Chignecto Provincial Park.

Walk through a Coal Age fossil forest, see volcanic flows, spectacular faults, igneous dykes, raised beaches, sea stacks, seals and ducks.

This is moderate walk suitable for all ages. Participants are asked to meet at the Fundy Geological Museum in Parrsboro at 10:30 a.m. or at the Eatonville entrance to Cape Chignecto at 11:30 a.m. Please wear sturdy footwear and bring a hat, sunscreen, a cool drink, and snacks.

The Beaubassin and Fort Lawrence Public Archaeology Experience is back at the Beaubassin and Fort Lawrence National Historic Sites of Canada for 2010.

The goal of the program is to do an inventory of the archaeological resources of the sites, while providing memorable experiences to visitors and participants. Parks Canada is proud to collaborate with CREDA to provide exceptional visitor experiences and increase the tourism offer of the Cumberland and Chignecto areas.

The archaeological team is eagerly waiting for the dig to start later this month. The Public Archaeology Experience will take place on four weekends, Thursday to Sunday, from July 22nd to August 15th. Visitors wishing to participate should sign up as soon as possible by contacting Fort Beauséjour -Fort Cumberland National Historic Site of Canada staff at 506-364-5080.

Registrations are limited to 12 participants per day, and the cost of registration is $36.70 per person for the full day.

The Public Archaeology Experience will start with an information session on the history of the region and archaeological techniques at the Fort Beauséjour - Fort Cumberland National Historic Site of Canada. Afterwards, participants will move on to the dig site, where they will be shown the archaeological techniques they will be using. Participants will also be helping with sorting and cleaning the artefacts that are found.
