The Bay of Fundy has been officially nominated as a participant in a worldwide contest to choose the New Seven Wonders of Nature. The Bay of Fundy Tourism Partnership will coordinate the Fundy voting effort.
The Bay of Fundy has been compared in marine biodiversity to the Amazon Rainforest. In addition to having the highest tides in the world, the Bay of Fundy achieved nominee status in the contest for globally significant features including: outstanding geology; UNESCO designation for the Joggins Fossil Cliffs as a World Heritage Site and the upper Bay of Fundy as a Biosphere Reserve; summer feeding area for over a dozen species of whales; critical feeding ground for 90% of the world’s population of semi-palmated sandpipers; and the best site in the world for tidal power potential.
Voting for the new seven natural wonders of the world commences immediately with the first milestone in the contest occurring on December 31, 2008, when nominees will be shortlisted to the final 21. Over 1 billion votes are expected by the conclusion of the contest. Voting can take place through www.bayoffundytourism.com website where a Facebook fan page for the Bay of Fundy as a New 7 Wonder has also been set up.
The mission of Bay of Fundy Tourism is to raise the profile of the Bay of Fundy as a Canadian nature tourism icon. This non-profit association is supported by the Nova Scotia and New Brunswick Departments of Tourism, Fundy-based Regional Development Associations including CREDA, Regional Tourism Associations, municipalities and tourism businesses.

The organizing committee for youth retention and recruitment initiatives in Cumberland County is inviting youth from all over the county to attend a Student/Youth Appreciation Night on Friday, August 15th at Robb’s Centennial Park on LaPlanche Street in Amherst.
Geared towards youths 15 to 25 years old, the night of fun and entertainment will include a free barbecue from 6 to 8 p.m. and a performance by local band “Grindstone” from 8 to 10 p.m. There will be prizes and literature on the opportunities and resources that are available for the youth of Cumberland County.
Several municipal councillors will be on hand to show their support for our youth and to demonstrate that there are people working to provide them with opportunities and a bright future right here at home. Recently hired Youth Retention and Attraction Coordinator Amanda McInnis is looking forward to meeting as many youth as possible, as well as to promote her position in the community and to help generate information for a youth oriented data base that is being developed specifically for young people in Cumberland County as well as for recent graduates who have moved away.
The appreciation night offers an excellent opportunity for youth to network and communicate with one another as well as with local municipal leaders in a relaxed and casual environment. For more information contact Amanda McInnis, Cumberland Youth Retention and Attraction Coordinator at 667-3638.
