Amherst Businesses to Tour Joggins
September 11, 2008
Amherst, NS - With a UNESCO World Heritage Site located virtually next door in Joggins, the Amherst and Area Chamber of Commerce would like to see businesses in Amherst promote the Fossil Cliffs to their customers, and in particular to tourists visiting the area.
With that in mind, the Chamber is partnering with the Town of Amherst, the Downtown Amherst Revitalization Society (DARS), the Cumberland Regional Economic Development Association (CREDA) and the Joggins Fossil Institute (JFI) to organize a familiarization tour of the new Joggins Fossil Centre and the Fossil Cliffs. Representatives from stores, restaurants, motels, banks and all other businesses who serve the public are invited to participate.
The initiative and organization of the tour is under the direction of Chamber Board member and Amherst Town Councillor Robert Angel who said, “the objective is to encourage Chamber members to send at least one or more staff members.” Angel said, “we want the employees of these businesses, who deal with the public, to become knowledgeable about this valuable new tourism asset in Joggins and to promote it when in contact with tourists.” Angel also stressed that he hopes, as the word spreads, more visitors will make Amherst and Joggins a travel destination.
The familiarization tour is scheduled for Wednesday, October 8th and will include a guided tour of the new Joggins Fossil Centre, the fossil cliffs and lunch. The tour will depart from Amherst Town Hall at 10:45, rain or shine, and can accommodate 48 business representatives. Transportation will be provided by Cumberland Transit.
There is no charge for participating businesses as the costs are being covered by the Amherst partners.
Interested businesses are asked to call the CREDA office at 667-3638 by 3:00 pm on Friday, October 3rd to register. Participants will be selected on a first come first serve basis.
