Welcome to the CREDA File, a monthly column on economic development issues and activities in Cumberland County from the files of the Cumberland Regional Economic Development Association - published monthly in the Citizen newspaper.

Once again this year students from Cumberland County who are away at post-secondary institutions and register will receive a care package just in time for April exams. The Cumberland Care Kits are an important component of CREDA’s Youth Attraction and Retention Strategy and are a reminder to our young people that their community supports their efforts and encourages them to seek employment options here at home. Last year 112 kits were sent out to students all across Canada and in several U.S. states.

The Care Kits are an opportunity for companies or organizations to support a worthwhile initiative and take advantage of an important promotional opportunity by providing coupons, product samples or other items bearing their logos, or to advertise for summer or permanent employees. Donated items could include snacks, personal care items, stationary, and coupons for goods and services. Companies who choose to provide financial sponsorships instead will have their company name, contact information, and a brief description of their products or services included in each kit. Contributions levels of $25, $50 and $100 are being suggested.

Items or financial contributions should be received by the CREDA office no later than Friday, March 5th to ensure the Care Kits are ready to be distributed the first week of April. Post secondary students or their parents or loved ones are also urged to contact Amanda McInnis, CREDA Youth Attraction and Retention Coordinator with their contact information to ensure they are on the list to receive Care Kits. Every small business in Nova Scotia has the potential to sell their products or service to the government, including institutions like schools and hospitals. Local businesses interested in learning more are invited to attend a Supplier Development Reverse Trade Show on Tuesday, April 13th from 1 to 4 p.m. at the Dr. Carson & Marion Murray Community Centre in Springhill. At this show, business vendors get to visit government display booths to discuss their potential sale of products or services.

As part of the provincial Supplier Development program, procurement staff from provincial, federal, and municipal governments will be on hand. You can introduce your products or services to them. Come and find out about sales opportunities for your business.

There is no cost for admission to this event which is sponsored by Nova Scotia Economic and Rural Development and Supplier Development in partnership with CREDA. There will also be a free presentation with the first starting at 1:15 and two learning sessions offered throughout the day.

The dates have been set for this year’s series of Woodland Conferences across Nova Scotia. Here in the central region the annual conference will be held on Saturday, March 27th at Winding River Elementary School in Stewiacke. Hear experts and woodland owners talk about woodland issues and learn about resources that can help you better understand and manage woodland sustainably.
