December 2009
December is a big month for the Fundy Geological Museum in Parrsboro. The much anticipated renovations have finally begun while the Cumberland Geological Society, operators of the museum, celebrated their 20th anniversary on December 3.
For the next several months only the museum shop, visitor information centre, foyer, multipurpose room and administrative offices will be open Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The gallery spaces will be closed while work to refresh and update the exhibits is carried out. For further information call 1-866-856-3466 or 1-902-254-3814, and continue to check out the museum web site for more information on exact dates, times and scope of the closure. Meanwhile, staff will be getting a well deserved break over the holidays as the Museum will close completely from Wednesday, December 23 until Monday, January 4, 2010.
The twelve Amherst murals, which have emerged as an important component in enhancing the image of the community’s landscape, are being commemorated in a colourful new calendar unveiled this month by the Downtown Amherst Revitalization Society (DARS).
A different mural is featured for each the 12 months of 2010 with the “signature” mural portraying the Old Home Week parade of 1910 as the image for the month of January. It was the first of the murals completed in 1997 by artists Susan Tooke and Bruce Rickett. The twelfth and final mural, depicting the 100th anniversary of Dayle’s Department Store, which was completed in 2009 by artist Daren White, is December’s featured mural.
The calendars are on sale for $10.00 each. They are available at several downtown locations including Bella’s Café, Dayle’s Department Store, Deanne Fitzpatrick’s Rug Hooking, Inglis Jewellers, Mansour’s Menswear, Pugsley’s Pharmacy and Mrs. Pugsley’s Emporium. Proceeds from the calendars go back into the continued maintenance and upkeep of the 12 murals.
Supporting partners with the Downtown Amherst Revitalization Society (DARS) in the Mural Project have included the Cumberland Regional Economic Development Association (CREDA), the Province of Nova Scotia, the Town of Amherst, Municipality of the County of Cumberland and other private and community sector partners.
With Christmas just around the corner the CREDA Board, staff, and partners would like to extend best wishes to one and all for a joyous holiday season and a happy, healthy and prosperous New Year.
